While the Caveman is necessary for survival, it creates a lot of challenges for us. Because of the way the brain has to simulate reality, the Caveman cannot tell the difference between what’s happening in reality and what’s playing in an inner movie. This is a big, hairy challenge. Earlier, I told you about my brain perceiving rattlesnakes, even when they weren’t there. This is the Caveman’s way of quickly jumping to conclusions before it sees what is really happening. Here’s how it works: Looking for proof takes too much time, so the Caveman must take over within milliseconds
if it thinks there is a threat. It is constantly scanning both your inner movie and outside activity to see if anything creates a threat warning. So, even misunderstood, but not real threats trigger the Caveman into action.
